Evidence and Commentary of Classroom Practices
Academic languages
By using academic languages like macron, arc, breve the students hear, recognize, understand, and build on their phonic skills. Taking the language a step further and being able to mark words accordingly, will help students understand why a word says what it does and the spelling along with it. It builds lasting understanding.
For future learning, I will add academic languages like the examples more often for repetitiveness to help students. Point it out in other lessons and do more hands-on experiences.
Differentiated learning
For differentiated learning I used the same reading passage but at different reading levels. With so many different reading levels, students need reading passages to fit where they are in their reading. That applies to lower and above reading levels as well as on grade reading levels.
In the future I would make more of these options available for my class. It worked well and I like the concept behind it. It is very important to have students engaged in their learning and in order to do that, it must be something that they are able to do with a little challenge.
Educational technology
Using technology in an educational setting, can help enhance learners by offering up immediate results on how students are doing. In this situation, the students take a skills test on their previous learned skill to show their understanding. It offers students to go at their own pace to do the skill check followed by the teacher getting results on areas that need a reteach with individual students. In this particular program, students that need more time on particular skills are given it and those who are ready to move on, are able to.
Since technology is the way of the future, I think that the more you can integrate technology into your classroom, the better. It can help with up-to-date information on scores, tracking progress, moving on in lessons, or working with concepts individual students might need along with many other possibilities. It can be a time saver for teachers and used as a tool to help enhance individual student development.
This newsletter went home with the student for the parent in order to communicate with the parents and update them on what is happening in our classroom. It offers support in many areas for the student to practice at home along with parent signatures to make sure the parents are receiving the information. It also gives my email so that the parents can further communicate with me as the teacher as needed.
For future learning, I would update the math and phonetic skills in an effort to keep the parent’s up to date on the student learning. Also adding helpful hints to coordinate with the reading, math, and phonics.
